Coaching changes aid UConn recruiting

Posted Dec 17, 2010

The Huskies still have the fewest commitments in the Big East, but are hoping their BCS bid, coupled with some coaching changes, will lead to a late surge on the recruiting trail.

Three star linebacker Marquise Vann, who decommitted from Minnesota because head coach Tim Brewster was let go, has committed to the Huskies according to Vann did not originally have UConn in his final three, but this time around the Huskies made a better impression.

No doubt UConn earning their first ever BCS berth piqued Vann's interest. He chose the Huskies over Stanford, Michigan State, Minnesota and a slew of MAC schools.

Pittsburgh recently relieved Dave Wannstedt of his duties, and the Huskies are hot on the trail of two of the Panthers' commitments.

Four star running back Jameel Poteat is looking around, and is said to be considering the Huskies. Fellow four star commit Kyshoen Jarrett may also open it up, and has mentioned the Huskies as a possible landing spot should he indeed decommit.

Poteat would be an important get for the Huskies, who may lose Jordan Todman to the NFL this off-season. Randy Edsall confirmed during Monday's press conference that he had submitted Todman's name to the NFL's Draft Advisory Board.

Redshirting freshman Lyle McCombs, who the Huskies have high hopes for, is a smaller, scat back type, while Poteat is a larger back at 5'11", 195 lbs. The two would compliment each other perfectly, much like Todman and Andre Dixon did during the 2009 season. That year both Todman and Dixon rolled up over 1000 yards each.

6'3", 205 lb wide receiver Cody Latimer, who is also from Ohio, was previously committed to Indiana, but with the recent firing of Head Coach Bill Lynch, is keeping his options open.

UConn is Latimer's only other BCS offer, which might put the Huskies in good position to land the wide out. Earlier in the season Taariq Allen, a wide out with a similar frame, decommitted from the Huskies in favor of Nebraska. Latimer would be a good replacement for Allen, however, his reaction to his UConn visit was lukewarm.

With less than two months from National Letter of Intent Day, the Huskies need to make up some ground on the rest of the conference. Some other names to keep an eye on down the stretch are Brandon Clemons, a three star OT/DT who visited this past weekend, Justin Cooper, a linebacker from Ft. Lauderdale Florida who will visit on 12/17, and three star linebacker Terrance Plummer, who will also reportedly visit soon.
