Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun keeps talking about what a great kid Andre Drummond is. And the talented big man has been a delight for reporters to cover with his warm personality, lack of ego, and his willing nature to help with interviews.

But now we are finding out there's more to his story. The New London Day is reporting that Drummond is a walk-on with UConn this season. He has told redshirt freshman Michael Bradley to keep the scholarship that Bradley offered to him in the summer.

Kyle Muncy, assistant director of athletics for communications, confirmed the report on Twitter Tuesday night, saying Drummond is a walk on and Bradley is on scholarship.

"A recruited player can pay his own way as long as all aid received is non-institutional," Muncy wrote. "That is the case with Drummond.

"This situation resolved itself in late October/early November. UConn deferred to Andre and his family as to when/how to make public."

“I’m thankful for what Mike was trying to do for me,” Drummond told Gavin Keefe of The Day.

“I told Mike, `Don’t do that, man. I’ll pay my way and take a scholarship next year. You don’t have to give up a scholarship for me.’ ” Scholarship reductions from the NCAA meant UConn already had reached its scholarship limit when Drummond, a 6-10 center from Middletown, surprised UConn fans and the college basketball world my committing to the Huskies in late August, just before the start of the fall semester.

Bradley told reporters in October that he volunteered to give up his scholarship and apply for financial aid, in order to help the team. Bradley has yet to play this season because of a broken ankle suffered in preseason workouts. He has returned to practice but isn't ready for game action yet.

The Day reports that later in the fall, Bradley went back on scholarship and Drummond became a walk-on, receiving some financial aid.

Drummond told The Day his family asked for the change.

“It was my decision,” Drummond said. “That’s not fair to him. He worked hard to get that scholarship. I’m not going to take something from somebody that’s not mine. It was my decision to come late.”
