Connecticut has confirmed to that sophomore Roscoe Smith has requested and received his release from the men's basketball team.

Smith's departure is another big blow to the Huskies' front line. And he becomes the fifth player to leave the program since the end of the season, joining Alex Oriakhi, jeremy Lanb, Andre Drummond and Michael Bradley.

Oriakhi, Smith and Bradley have all been granted their release. At this point the Huskies will return just six scholarship players for the 2012-13 season - when they likely will not be eligible for postseason play because of NCAA sanctions related to poor academic performance.

The process of completing Smith's paper work for his release was completed late Friday.

Lamb and Drummond are headed to the NBA. Oriakhi has transferred to Missouri. Officially, Bradley and Smith could return to UConn. That doesn't seem likely in Smith's case. Bradley is looking at his options, including Western Kentucky and Georgia State.

Smith's father told on Saturday morning that his son, a sophomore forward for the Huskies, will leave the program. Smith, 6-8, averaged 4.4 points in 18.7 minutes this past season, which was down from 6.3 points and 25.4 minutes his freshman campaign when he helped the Huskies win the national championship.

At this point, Shabazz Napier, Ryan Boatright, Tyler Olander, Enosch Wolf, Niels Giffey and DeAndre Daniels are expected to return for next season. Omar Calhoun is the only signed high school recruit. And R.J. Evans announce his intentions to transfer from Holy Cross for his final season of eligibility.
