After practice Saturday morning in the Shenkman Center, coach Paul Pasqualoni talked about UConn's depth at running back, the progress of injured freshman quarterback Casey Cochran, the development of the offensive line and practicing at Rentschler Field.
Sophomore Lyle McCombs, UConn's offensive player of the year in 2011 when he rushed for 1,151 yards, will be the starter at tailback. But Martin Hyppolite, Max DeLorenzo and Joseph Williams have had productive camps. Pasqualoni says they all have unique talents and he would like to get the most out of all of them.
The offensive line is trying to replace center Moe Petrus and tackle Mike Ryan. One of the keys is big senior tackle Jimmy Bennett (6-9, 309), who is coming back after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament agains Western Michigan last year. We will take a closer look at Bennett's comeback in the coming days.
The Huskies open the season Aug. 30 against UMass at The Rent. Tuesday they will go to the stadium for a scrimmage that is closed to public and media.
