Connecticut guard Bria Hartley is observing at practice but still not participating in drills because of her left ankle injury.

STORRS – Connecticut guard Bria Hartley is still wearing a protective boot, slowing recovering from the medial sprain of her left ankle, and now it appears she may not play during preseason.

Hartley was injured during the FIBA 3 x 3 World Championhip in Greece before returning to UConn.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma said Hartley is feeling better, but her competitive nature may have slowed her rehab.

“She was somewhat less than forthcoming about whether or not her ankle was bothering her,” Auriemma said. “Now we’re playing catch up a little bit. The edical staff has given me reassurance that there won’t be any problem between now and getting ready for opening day.”

Asked if Hartley could play in UConn’s exhibition game Nov. 2, Auriemma said, “I don’t know. I hope so. Right now it’s probably 50/50.”

Said Hartley: “I’ve just got to make I’m out there [at practice], paying attention and stuff like that so that when I do get back on the court I’m ready to go and know everything that’s going on.”

Freshman Moriah Jefferson (groin sprain) did participate in full practice Thursday.
