Austin to the Big East

Brandon Austin's college choice is in. He committed to Providence on Monday.

Brandon Austin will play his college basketball in the Big East.

Austin committed to Ed Cooley and Providence on Monday, according to his travel team coach Lonnie Lowry. He picked the Friars over strong interest from Connecticut and Texas.

Austin, who stands 6-foot-6, is an athletic wing prospect with a long, wiry frame. He impressed this summer on Team Philly and at camps, where he was able to showcase his athleticism, improved skill and ability to defend and rebound.

Austin is regarded as a four-star prospect. He checks in at No. 39 overall in the 2013 class.

According to AAU Coach Lonnie Lowry the decision came down to Austin's relationship with Providence boss Ed Cooley.

"I would say his relationship with Coach Cooley was the difference," said Austin. "I think he really trusts Coach Cooley and everything he is saying."

He continued, "Texas was just too far. He really liked Texas, but it was too far."

Providence now has a pair of commitments in 2013. Austin joins three-star prospect Rodney Bullock to make up their current recruiting class.

This is the second year in a row Cooley has landed a top 50 prospect. In fact, in 2012 Providence reeled a pair of top 50 recruits.
