The expectation going into Metuchen (NJ) St. Joseph’s standout Karl Towns decision was that he would end up in the SEC playing for the Kentucky Wildcats. Well, no one was disappointed in Lexington as that was exactly what happened.
On Tuesday morning at his school the 6-foot-9 and 225 pound Towns donned Kentucky gear and announced his commitment to play for John Calipari.
As Towns stepped up to the microphone Towns made two announcements.
“I’m going to re-classify to the year of 2014,” said Towns. “I made that decision with my family.”
He then went on to say, “The University I decided to play at is the University of Kentucky.”
Kentucky was seen as the leader for Towns from the very beginning. Despite offers from Rutgers, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Baylor, Michigan State, Florida, Duke, and North Carolina State, the Wildcats seemingly always were in the driver’s seat.
Towns played for the Dominican Republic National Team over the summer which was coached by Calipari, and that could only help as the Wildcats were the clear leader going into the that time period. Then Calipari’s presence with the team basically just sealed the deal as the parties got to know each other better.
The top player in the 2015 class, Towns will now make the move to the 2014 class where he will be the first commitment for the Wildcats. As always UK is involved with many of the elite prospects in the class, and this is an excellent start for Calipari and his staff as they once again work to bring in the top group of recruits in the country.
