Tucker Ready for Next Step in Recruiting

Vashon Tucker

NEWARK, Del. -- Class of 2014 cornerback Vashon Tucker has four offers and is hoping a strong winter leads to more. He spoke to FOXSportsNEXT about his recruitment, and who he is talking to he most.

Cornerback Vashon Tucker may participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl underclassman combine, but he is really looking to make his mark in a winter league full contact program Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton, Md.) will play in.

ECA's season abruptly ended after four games as opponents pulled out because of questions regarding sanctioning approval, so many of the underclassmen don't have much junior film to distribute.

However, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Tucker has four offers, and a strong performance in the winter league could increase that total.

"I think (having he season cancelled) hurt a lot, but we're stilling getting better and we have a good coach that is going to get us more (offers)," Tucker said. "He knows what he's doing. We're playing winter league, and that's more games, more films, and hopefully that can help out."

Tucker holds offers from Rutgers, UCLA, Hawaii and Massachusetts, and he said he continues to hear from those schools as well as West Virginia.

His last visit was to Rutgers for the regular season finale against Louisville.

"It was exciting. I liked the atmosphere," Tucker said. "The coaches seemed cool. It seems like I would fit in. I had been up there for 7-on-7s and touring the college. I like the facilities. It's great. It's fascinating."

Tucker is also getting to know Rutgers' staff, which turned over in late January.

"The staff is good," he said. "They're calm, and it feels like you fit in well."

Tucker is hopeful of making a visit to UCLA in the coming months because of the chatter from teammates.

Several visited the campus in the spring, including current USC commit Khaliel Rodgers, and former teammate Eli Ankou is now with the Bruins.

"I want to get out to California," he said. "I hear a lot of good things (about UCLA). UCLA has a field of study I want to go into. I want to go into male nursing or to be a doctor."

Closer to home, Tucker is also talking with West Virginia, where teammates Daikiel Shorts and Wendell Smallwood are committed to go.

Tucker took in the Mountaineers' early-season game against Maryland.

"It was good. It was exciting," he said. "The fans knew us, knew our names, and we're cheering us on to come there. When I go, I'm looking for how I would fit in because I don't want to go somewhere I'm not going to fit."
