Rutgers Scores Season-Low 48 in Loss

Rutgers has now gone 18 days without a victory following a 68-48 loss to No. 11 Louisville tonight at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Trailing by just two at the half, the Scarlet Knights collapsed during a 23-4 run and finished with a season-low 48 points.

Rutgers hit the same second-half wall that it has in every game of the near three-week losing streak. Down by just one possession against No. 11 Louisville last night, Rutgers gave up multiple double-digit runs in what became its fifth straight loss.

Via a 68-48 final, the Cardinals used a 23-4 run to start the second half and blow out a Rutgers team that had them on upset alert at the midway point. The Scarlet Knights dictated the pace early, then made just seven field goals in an ugly final 20 minutes.

"We need to score the ball better," said head coach Mike Rice. "Guys need to score the ball better … we need some more offensive help right now we're not getting that offensive help."

Rutgers shot just 32 percent from the floor and had more turnovers than field goals in the second half.

Louisville, however, caught fire down the stretch with 40 points in the second half. Wayne Blackshear led the Cardinals with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

"I think, we as a team, subconsciously let up," said forward Wally Judge. "We turned the ball over and they got a lot of open shots."

Rutgers (12-9, 3-7) gets another shot at home to end its losing streak Saturday. The Scarlet Knights host No. 21 Georgetown for a noon tip.

"No one is getting us out of this funk and this feeling except us," Rice said to his locker room after the loss. Recommended Stories
