STORRS, Conn. (April 16, 2005) – UConn seniors Jessica Moore (Palmer, Alaska) and Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were selected on back-to-back picks in the second round of the 2005 WNBA Draft on Saturday.
Both former Huskies were chosen in the second round, with Moore being selected by the Charlotte Sting with the 24th pick overall just prior to Battle being selected 25th overall by the Seattle Storm, where she will reunite with former UConn teammate Sue Bird.
Moore and Battle are the 13th and 14th UConn players ever selected in a WNBA Draft and it marks the third time in the last five years that Connecticut has had multiple players selected.
Moore was selected to the Big East All-Tournament team and earned honorable mention All-Big East following a season which saw her post her 1,000th career point. She was the Huskies' leading rebounder in 2004-05 at 6.3 rebounds per game and registered double-figure points in 11 games as a senior.
She ranks third on the UConn career leaderboard in field goal percentage at .584 and is 22nd all-time among the program's all-time leading scorers with 1,223 career points.
Battle (right) ended her UConn career as the program's all-time leader in games played at 149. She ranks 26th among the program's all-time scoring leaders with 1,054 career points. The 2003 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, Battle amassed 191 steals during her collegiate career.
Moore and Battle were members of a UConn senior class that posted a record of 132-13 and won three national championships during its four-year run in Storrs.
