Bridgeport, Conn., native Trevardo Williams became the first member of the Class of 2008 for Coach Randy Edsall and the Connecticut program in February, but most Husky fans know little about him. We caught up with Williams tonight to learn a bit more about why he chose Connecticut.
At 10 years old
Trevardo Williams
and the rest of his family came from Jamaica to the United States to join their mother, who had already been in the States working to make the move possible. Eight years later, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound athlete will be making another big move in his life, however this one won’t be quite as drastic.
“I chose
Connecticut
in February for a few reasons,” Williams said. “First, it’s close to my home which was very important to me. I wanted to stay close to my family and this was the best option in that respect. Also, when I researched schools Connecticut looked to have excellent academics, so I was high on them from the start.”
Most people in his situation sift through mounds of mail, text message and call coaching staffs, take official and unofficial visits and go through the full process of recruiting before finally deciding on their college choice. For Williams, the decision was much simpler. In fact, no other school ever entered the picture in any capacity.
“Connecticut offered me a scholarship so I just accepted it,” Williams explained. “I have a lot of trust in the coaching staff and they give me good advice, so I feel like it’s a great place for me to be. I think they plan for me to play linebacker or bulk up and play defensive end. My strengths are that I’m very quick and have great speed. I’m also a quick learner and good teammate. I try my hardest to answer any questions my teammates have for me and always help them working out or with studies.”
“When I went to see the campus at Connecticut I was very impressed. The facilities were great. I saw things like the indoor field, the weight room, the lounges and other state of the art things. I heard more is coming to which is impressive. I also learned a bit about what they offered academically there and think I’m going to major in architecture as I really enjoy drawing and am artistic.”
As a junior at Bridgeport Central, Williams made 29 tackles, sacked the quarterback 13 times and recovered five fumbles which certainly helped him towards All-League honors at defensive end.
