Huskies Offer Murray

Latavius Murray has already been offered scholarships by programs close to home in Boston College and Syracuse and also picked up an offer from Central Florida, one that intrigues him simply because of location admittedly. This week Connecticut stepped in and extended an offer to Murray, but at what position is a mystery.

Latavius Murray, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound athlete from Onondaga High School in Nedrow, N.Y., rushed for over 2,000 yards last season as part of a powerful backfield that simply tore through opponents on a weekly basis. Given his frame and the way he has been growing however, some schools have decided to recruit Murray on the defensive side of the ball. This week Connecticut sent Murray his fourth written scholarship offer, however until he talks to the staff it is up in the air what the Huskies like him as.

“Connecticut told me coach they were going to offer me a couple of day ago and then I just got the letter in the mail yesterday,” Murray said. “Right now there isn’t much I can tell you about Connecticut because I haven’t been on campus for a visit or studied them at all, but I have been able to meet one of the coaches a few times.”

Murray has expressed previous interest in going to school in Florida and at this point the only camp he will definitely be attending this summer will be in Gainesville with Urban Meyer and staff. He is also planning a trip to Michigan and said he could take a visit to Connecticut if transportation is found. One thing that could help the Huskies in his recruitment is the job that Coach Mike Foley has already done with Murray.

“Coach (Mike) Foley has been to my school a couple of times already,” Murray explained. “He also came to one of my football games this season and even attended one of my basketball games as well, so I know that they are very interested. I was very surprised to see him come to one of my basketball games and it feels good to have a school make me that important to them. That is definitely something I will keep in mind when I am figuring out who my top schools are later. When I met Coach Foley he was a real cool guy and I have been able to talk to him a few times now. All I know about the school though is what my coach has told me. He said that Connecticut was a good school and a good football program that is playing in a competitive conference.”

Whether Connecticut can get Murray on campus sometime this summer may play a big part in his feelings about the Huskies. He has repeatedly voiced an interest in not only wanting to play somewhere further south, but wanting to go to school someplace warm. A mid-Winter visit to Storrs would probably not be the most ideal situation for the coaching staff.

As a junior at Onondaga high School, Murray rushed for 2,017 yards and 32 touchdowns, earning first team All-CNY, All-League and All-State honors.
