Andre Dixon Ailing

Posted Aug 26, 2008

UConn coach Randy Edsall has boasted for months about the quality of his running back stable and its depth. The depth provided a security blanket for the coach and it looks like the Huskies are going to have to file a claim on Thursday in their opener against Hofstra.

Running back Andre Dixon, the backup up to starter Donald Brown yet still an important part of the offense, hurt his ankle in practice and is likely out for the opener Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Rentschler Field.

According Edsall, Dixon’s bum ankle is day-to-day and that will likely keep him out of action in the opener. In his place, redshirt freshman Robbie Frey is set to taste the field for the first time.

“We got to take a look at him and see what happens to him,” Edsall said. “He has an ankle sprain and we will see how it is. We will decide what we are going to do today (Wednesday).”

Frey is a 6-foot-0 tailback for Leighton, Pa. who was perilously close to playing as a true freshman but never did get in. He rushed 282 times as a senior for 2,035 yards and 27 touchdowns at Leighton High.

Dixon is the Huskies leading returning rusher from last year and was considered not the backup but 1a on the depth chart with junior Donald Brown.

While Dixon went down, the Huskies did get good news on other injury fronts. Redshirt freshman safety Aaron Bagsby has returned after missing all of fall camp with a knee injury. Bagsby will be in the full pads this week and Edsall said he is very much in the mix to play. There is also good news on true freshman running back Jordan Todman and junior receiver Brad Kanuch. Kanuch had a sprained shoulder suffered during a scrimmage neat the end of camp but is back in pads at practice with no contact. Kanuch has missed all of summer and fall camp with first a quad injury, and then a hamstring injury. He isn’t likely to suit up on Thursday, but he is slowly his way back to full speed in practice.

Young veterans

For a team that is bringing back almost 20 players who have started a game it seems odd to refer to the Huskies has youthful.

Looking at the depth chart that is exactly what they are. Edsall couldn’t help but notice the youth.

“We got a decent mix, but when you break-it down, 70 percent of roster is redshirt freshmen and sophomores,” Edsall said. “You are talking over 70 of them falling into that category.”

The Huskies are inexperienced. A lot of the youngsters played major minutes last year and there is a host of 5th year senior such as corner back Darius Butler, tackle Will Beatty and defensive end Julius Williams that have been around.

“I like the mix we have,” Edsall said. “We have 14 scholarships in senior class. You have experience, but you have a lot of youth in there well. It is all starting to come together how we are going to build the program.”

Husky notes

Cheating in college football? Never.

The NCAA officials have put an emphasis this year on stealing signs and other similar “ways to get an advantage.”

Is there a college Bill Belichick looming? Probably, but Edsall believes it is more a reaction to the NFL game than something wrong with college football.

“They don't want anyone filming the other teams,” Edsall said. “More so conference teams than anything. I don't think we have that problem in college football If someone is doing it there should be a penalty. It is not in the spirit and rules of the game.”

The Huskies have sold about 35,000 tickets for Thursday's opener and have about 5,000 seats remaining. The Huskies sold 28,000 seasons tickets and the student season tickets, roughly 4,700, are also sold out.
